I think an unhealthy future is where some of us thrive and some of us don't get that same opportunity and get left behind.

Felicia, a mum of 3 kids under the age of 7, wants her kids to learn where food comes from and "appreciate the growth process and cultivation of food”.

As a family, they started a veggie patch in their backyard, but Felicia says it wasn’t easy.

“For those of us who haven’t [grown vegetables] before and want to do it, we don’t really know where to start. Do you just start digging up your backyard?”

She wants to see more education around accessing healthy food and growing your own produce.

What started as a family experiment has turned into a community garden, bringing with it stronger connections between neighbours.

“The community garden is open to all of the neighbours in this area. They brought seeds, the kids have planted them and there are watering cans there for anyone who wants to water them.

“The produce is going to be shared among the neighbours, whoever wants or needs can come and grab some, and people can watch the process of food growing.”

Felicia loves the sense of community it has brought, “the community spirit is really being brought out when people are invested into something and they feel a part of belonging.”
